I’d hoped to see a small essay out today, but life got in the way. (We spent an hour sitting in a doctor’s office today as they debated the merits of inducing my wife, who is now 3 days past her due date.) So, I thought it would be fun to return to our semi-regular discussion thread: tell me what you’re reading. Alternatively, tell me about the best book you’ve read this summer.
I just finished Josef Pieper’s Happiness & Contemplation, which has its charms (I love the emphasis on contemplation as a form of perception) and its weaknesses (it often proceeds via ‘Argument by Quotation of Thomas Aquinas’). I plan to read the following books in September, should the arrival of the baby not prove too disruptive:
- Enshittification by Cory Doctorow (I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC)
- Erasure by Percival Everett
- The Intuitionist by Colson Whitehead
- Hegel by Frederick Beiser
- Why Read the Classics? by Italo Calvino
- Warm Worlds and Otherwise by James Tiptree Jr.
I’ll also be continuing our reading of Zhuangzi and consulting some books by Chris Fraser as needed for that project.
So, tell me what you’re reading.

For the first time, im reading East of Eden. Its also turning into the best thing ive read this summer.
best book i read this summer is A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. It’s simple, funny and informative, definitely makes me wanna go backpacking
