Of interest to Austinites: Ryan owns a bookstore in Bastrop. I have not been but it looks great and I plan on heading there soon now. https://www.thepaintedporch.com/pages/about-us

It’s a nice little day trip. You can visit that whole little downtown strip and behind the store (on the painted porch) there’s a great little restaurant to get some good pizza and drinks at.

It’s a really lovely place. I was there last year and I bought one of his books. The whole town is also very quiet and worth a visit.

I live only about 40 minutes away and have close friends north of there a ways, but somehow we've only ever driven through and smelled the pines.

Couldn’t agree more. Also love to see writers and thinkers I respect supporting other writers and thinkers I respect. Thanks for posting!

Free speech is important when you're the one being censored, but not when you're censoring. "Free speech for me but not for thee" seems to be the policy of the powerful.

Couldn’t help but think about our current read-along of Plato’s Republic. Thank you for following this story and sharing.

Ryan was right in this instance, but his politics often overshadow his philosophy, risking the coherence of the latter. Perhaps this could serve as a wake-up call for him as well.

If only it was possible to mix politics and philosophy somehow. Alas..

Clearly not what I meant but let's just say it worked great for Heidegger.

I haven't always liked Holiday's methods of popularizing philosophy, after watching the video he posted on this last week, my respect for him increased a great deal.

Just out of curiosity, how much research did you do for this piece? Some of the books on this list are from authors who are essentially race-grifters like Kendi and DeAngelo. What's more interesting are what books remain at the Nimitz Library - and as far as I can tell books like the Communist Manifesto and others books Mr. Stockdale would have presumably been educated on in his social sciences classes remain. At least that's what I could find on the online database. Why didn't you do a little bit of a deep dive on the topic? DEI is a subject that should absolutely be receiving intellectual scrutiny, but for some reason it's getting a pass. It's disappointing if you simply pulled facts from other articles (like the fact about Maya Angelou's book being pulled), instead of looking for yourself into it.

I'll just add Ryan Holiday essentially sold all his credibility last election cycle when he made videos implying Marcus Aurelius would vote for Kamala Harris. He makes subversive content now for whatever reason which is sad, and I personally don't construe any ambiguities in his favor.

An excellent share. I saw Ryan's video on this and felt that with so much of the DEI, 'they' haven't looked in the mirror enough. The nepotism and cult-ish behaviour are extreme.

Not long before the hemlock starts to run out. : (((((((

Honestly, the fact that he went to the NYT is a little telling. I haven’t seen a list of the books removed for reading but any book that advocates for reverse racism should be removed. Otherwise, I’ll just set up a Bull Connor shelf and watch heads explode. If you want to read James Baldwin you can easily do that on your own time. Frankly, many in the military want a break from any Marxist metaphysics and I can’t blame.

This is exactly what he claimed. A Navy Pilot learned Marxism not to be indoctrinated but to understand other views etc. The DOD claimed this wasn’t in alignment with new directives. And that specific books were removed from the naval library. I know what I read. And I know the implications. Again, he could have taken his story to other outlets. He did not.

I clearly did. He claims his presentation was benign and any Marxist material being presented was akin to the Navy pilot in his story. The implication being is the new administration is reactionary and of course this leads straight back to the President. He could have given his story to other publications but chose The NY Times. Call it the “hermeneutics of suspicion”. I get it.

That is not what he claimed. You should practice reading more carefully.

Again, he believes he was unfairly censored or there was a misunderstanding about his presentation. You claim he was correct in his refusal to “censor” his lecture. And the Naval academy was correct in asking him to censor anything they disagreed with. He’s a paid speaker and the Naval academy is allowed to ask him to tailor his material to their liking.

Ryan Holliday is ugly. Unsurprising that his ideas and thinking are also repugnant to me. Fuck Marxism. Fuck nihilism. Fuck tolerance of evil, which is really just moral cowardice and aversion to violence that we now pretend is a virtue. Our ancestors would be so disappointed in us. The hubris to throw away sacred traditions and call it progress is nauseating. Oh, but good news, lawyers are involved and fighting over it.

You obviously haven’t engaged with any of his ideas at all. And feeling so much hatred in your heart before ever even engaging with someone who (potentially) thinks differently than you do…is a terribly corrosive way to live.
