Just wanted to say thank you for the nudge. Having read the Earthsea books as teenage I’ve not explored her works any deeper even though this has novel been accessible from the wife’s bookshelf for decades.
I recently put down “The Left Hand of Darkness” about 120 pages in. I really appreciate everything she had going on, I think it just wasn’t what I was looking for at the time. Much more about the nuanced social and political structure, and the implications that simple interactions can have in this society.
I’m interested to give The Dispossessed a go, and be able to have others as a sounding board and glean their interpretations and thoughts.
This is a timely read after Arendt’s The Human Condition and our current socio-political climate in the US. I started this a little early and am now way ahead of our reading schedule. I’m enjoying it a great deal.
Thanks for the introduction, I’ve just subbed after seeing your community post on YouTube. I’m looking to diving into this as the only LeGuin I’ve read thus far is “The One’s Who Walk Away from Omelas” in a high school English class. I’m particularly interested in how she facilitates the mentioned philosophical trinity, if you will. A science fiction novel inspired by those themes sounds like something right up my alley.
I've just followed your substack and the first thing you do is giving me a reason to read Le Guin! Thank you very much, as I was missing something to read that motivated me and this is it. I'll do my best to follow this read along, thought I'm going to read the book in Spanish as is my mother tongue
I did catch up on your latest videos on youtube very timely to jump in to the Dispossessed train. Just read this post and will read the beginning of the novel and join the discussion. I absolutely love The left hand of Darkness and Earthsea and A word for the world is forest, but I also would looove to read with you and fellow readers. Thank you for keeping those free!

I am really enjoying The Dispossessed so far. I'm sure I'll be thinking about Annares a lot when we read The Republic.
Was placing The Dispossessed right before The Republic a deliberate choice on your part?
I was picking books based on themes, but this particular sequence is a matter of fortune.

What are your other favorite works by Le Guin? And which ones are the most philosophically interesting?
The Left Hand of Darkness is one of my favourite novels
